Immenstadt im Allgäu issued these small-denomination emergency notes as Notgeld during the acute coin shortage that gripped Germany in the First World War — municipal authorities across Bavaria found themselves printing fractional currency simply to keep local commerce moving when metal coinage disappeared from circulation almost overnight.
J. P. Himmer was a well-established Augsburg printing house with a long record of commercial and official work in the region. The official seal served as the sole security feature, which was typical of hastily arranged municipal issues where the credibility of the issuing authority mattered more than sophisticated anti-counterfeiting measures at these trivial denominations.
