Zwönitz is a small Saxon textile town, and the "Vereinigung der Geschäftsinhaber" — an association of local shopkeepers — was precisely the kind of body that stepped in across Germany during 1918 when the imperial government could no longer supply adequate small-denomination coinage. The chronic coin shortage, driven by wartime metal requisitioning, pushed thousands of municipalities, merchants, and civic groups to print their own Notgeld. This note is one of them.
At roughly 50 × 48 mm, it is nearly square — an unusual proportion that likely reflects whatever paper stock the local printer had to hand rather than any deliberate design choice.
