Zwiesel is a glassmaking town in the Bavarian Forest, and by 1918 the twin pressures of war requisitioning and hoarding had stripped Germany's smaller municipalities of almost all circulating coinage. This piece is one of hundreds of locally issued Kriegsnotgeld tokens produced under those conditions — zinc chosen here precisely because copper and nickel had been absorbed into the war effort years earlier.
