Wüstewaltersdorf, a weaving town in Silesia, was home to Websky, Hartmann & Wiesen, one of the region's significant textile manufacturers. Like hundreds of German industrial firms in 1918, the company issued its own emergency coinage — Notgeld — as the imperial monetary system buckled under war strain and small-denomination metal coins vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted. Zinc was the material of necessity by that point; copper and nickel had long since been redirected to the war effort.
