By 1915, Germany's wartime metal demands had made nickel coinage increasingly impractical — the Kriegsmetall program would soon redirect base metals toward munitions. This piece was struck as a pattern, almost certainly as part of the broader search for a viable substitute coinage material that would not conflict with military-industrial priorities. The program ultimately favored iron, which replaced nickel in circulating Pfennig denominations from 1915 onward.
