Pattern coinage from 1893 Germany presents a genuine documentary puzzle — official Probe issues of this period were produced by the Berlin Mint in small numbers to test new alloys or designs under consideration by the Reichsbank, and nickel-plated zinc was actively evaluated as a cheaper alternative to the copper-nickel then in use. The plating technology proved unreliable under circulation conditions, and the composition was ultimately rejected.
Surviving examples almost never show plating loss on the high points — a consequence of never reaching circulation, not of careful handling.
