Obverse description An outer pearl border follows the octagonal flan edge, enclosing a circular pearl inner border within which the municipal coat of arms of Weissenburg is centrally placed. The arms display a fortified city gate with two crenellated towers flanking an arched portal, rendered in fine relief. The circular legend STADT WEISSENBURG I/E runs between the two pearl borders along the upper arc, with the date 1917 positioned at the base between two five-pointed stars.

Additional information

Wissembourg — known as Weissenburg under German administration — issued this iron notgeld in 1917 as wartime metal requisitions stripped municipal coffers of usable coin. By that point, the German military had been systematically pulling copper and nickel from circulation for over two years, leaving small towns across Alsace to improvise their own emergency issues. Iron was the unsentimental solution: cheap, available, and deeply unpopular with the public, who found it prone to rust and difficult to distinguish by touch from other denominations.
