Walldürn is a small Catholic pilgrimage town in Baden, and its 1918 notgeld issue belongs to the enormous wave of municipal emergency coinage that flooded Germany as the imperial government lost its grip on metal supplies during the final year of the war. Zinc was chosen by necessity — copper and nickel had been requisitioned for the war effort years earlier. Most of these small-town issues circulated briefly and heavily before being redeemed or simply abandoned when the crisis passed.
