Ostheim's Vorschuß- und Sparverein — a cooperative savings and loan association — was among thousands of small German institutions that resorted to issuing their own emergency scrip when the wartime coin shortage of 1917 made low-denomination Reichsmark coinage effectively vanish from everyday commerce. This is Kleingeldersatz in its most local form: a community institution substituting for a state that had melted and spent its own small change.
Selmar Bayer of Berlin produced enormous quantities of such Notgeld for municipal and cooperative clients across Prussia. The pressing practicality of the thing is obvious in its dimensions.
