Überlingen's iron Notgeld emerged from the same wartime metal shortage that stripped German municipalities of their copper and nickel coinage — both metals redirected to military production by 1916 imperial decree. Überlingen, a small lakeside town on the Bodensee, issued this piece through its Stadtgemeinde as the Reichsbank proved wholly unable to keep small change in circulation. Iron was a stopgap nobody liked: it corroded rapidly, stuck to magnets in counting machines, and was universally despised by retailers.
The Funck reference places this as the .3 variety, indicating at least three distinct die or edge variants were produced for this type alone.
