| Additional information |
Bayerische Stickstoffwerke AG was established at Trostberg in 1908 to exploit the Birkeland–Eyde and later the Frank–Caro process for fixing atmospheric nitrogen — industrial chemistry that made the site strategically critical during both world wars. Factory tokens of this type circulated internally among the plant workforce, functioning as canteen or wage scrip rather than general currency. Zinc was the wartime compromise material of choice, replacing the brass and iron issues that preceded it when metal allocation tightened under Reich procurement controls.
