Deutsche Molybdän-Werke operated a chemical works at Teutschenthal, in Saxony-Anhalt, processing molybdenum compounds primarily for industrial and metallurgical applications. Like hundreds of German industrial firms during the acute small-change shortage of the early Weimar period, the company issued its own notgeld tokens to pay workers when official coinage had effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply never produced in sufficient quantity to meet demand. Zinc was the practical choice: cheap, available, and already familiar to German mints from wartime emergency issues.
