Tempelburg — now Czaplinek, in modern Poland — issued iron notgeld during the material shortages of World War I, when the German imperial government progressively requisitioned copper and nickel coinage for war production. Municipal authorities across Pomerania and Brandenburg filled the resulting gap with locally sanctioned iron and zinc pieces, each carrying implied redemption by the issuing Magistrat rather than the Reich.
Iron notgeld of this type corrodes aggressively in storage, making clean survivors genuinely scarce relative to original mintage.
