| Reverse description | The reverse displays the heraldic arms of the city of Suhl within the octagonal field, bordered by a continuous row of raised dots along the inner edge. The upper portion of the arms depicts a crenellated wall surmounted by two flanking towers with gabled roofs, between which two crossed hammers are prominently displayed, referencing the city's historic metalworking and arms-manufacturing trade. Below the battlemented wall, a gateway arch frames a crouching rooster, the traditional heraldic bird of the Suhl civic arms. The overall composition is rendered in low relief appropriate to the zinc striking technique. |

Suhl issued zinc notgeld in 1917 as the imperial wartime metal requisitions stripped municipal reserves of copper and nickel — both critical to shell casings and military hardware. German cities were explicitly authorized to produce emergency coinage that year precisely because the Reichsbank could not supply adequate small change to a civilian economy hemorrhaging its base metals to the front.
