Reverse description The reverse displays the heraldic arms of the city of Suhl within the octagonal field, bordered by a continuous row of raised dots along the inner edge. The upper portion of the arms depicts a crenellated wall surmounted by two flanking towers with gabled roofs, between which two crossed hammers are prominently displayed, referencing the city's historic metalworking and arms-manufacturing trade. Below the battlemented wall, a gateway arch frames a crouching rooster, the traditional heraldic bird of the Suhl civic arms. The overall composition is rendered in low relief appropriate to the zinc striking technique.

Additional information

Suhl issued zinc notgeld in 1917 as the imperial wartime metal requisitions stripped municipal reserves of copper and nickel — both critical to shell casings and military hardware. German cities were explicitly authorized to produce emergency coinage that year precisely because the Reichsbank could not supply adequate small change to a civilian economy hemorrhaging its base metals to the front.
