Tramway companies across German-speaking territories issued their own small-denomination notgeld during and after World War I to address the chronic shortage of subsidiary coinage — the war had pulled copper and nickel out of circulation and into munitions. Halle's tramway authority was among dozens of transit operators that printed or pressed their own fare tokens and fractional notes rather than wait for the municipal or state treasury to act.
Pressed cardboard rather than paper signals a purely functional object: durable enough to survive repeated handling in conductor pouches and turnstile trays, not intended as a collectible. These pieces circulated hard.
