Spremberg's 1920 notgeld issue belongs to the vast wave of municipal iron coinage produced across Germany as the postwar metal shortage and currency chaos made small-denomination Reichsmünzen effectively impossible to keep in circulation. Spremberg, a small textile and coal town in Lower Lusatia, was among hundreds of similarly sized municipalities that took emergency coining authority into their own hands between 1919 and 1921. The Funck 514.2 variant designation suggests at least one die or planch difference distinguishes it from a parallel issue in the series.
