Wunstorf's municipal savings bank — the Sparkasse der Stadt Wunstorf — issued this note during the acute coin shortage that gripped Germany in the immediate postwar period. Small-denomination Notgeld of this type was a purely local stopgap, authorized by individual municipalities and valid only within the issuing town's commercial circuit. Müller & Mahnkopp of Hildesheim handled a substantial volume of such work for Lower Saxon issuers in 1920, printing for dozens of small Sparkassen across the region.
The DeNG reference suffix "1a-2/4" indicates a specific plate variant within the series — collectors should note that Wunstorf's 10 Pfennig exists in at least four recognized sub-varieties.
