Tichau (now Tychy, in Silesia) was a small industrial settlement, and this 10 Pfennig note is a piece of Kriegsgeld — emergency small-change scrip issued by a local cooperative credit union when coin coinage disappeared from circulation during the First World War. The Reichsbank's wartime metal requisitions drove copper and nickel out of everyday trade, forcing hundreds of small institutions, including rural credit cooperatives like this one, to print their own fractional notes to keep local commerce moving.
The issuer, a Spar- und Darlehnskassenverein of the Raiffeisen type, would have had a membership drawn largely from the local working population — not a municipal authority, but a mutual self-help financial body with legal standing under German cooperative law.
