Dahlenburg is a small market town in Lower Saxony, and its cooperative savings and loan society — the Spar- und Darlehnskasse — was among thousands of rural German credit cooperatives that found themselves issuing emergency small-change notes in 1920 when coin shortages became acute following the economic disruptions of the First World War. Franz Scherrer in Hanover printed a considerable volume of Notgeld for local issuers across the region during this period, operating as a reliable commercial job printer rather than a specialist security printer.
