Seitenberg was a small industrial village in the Grafschaft Glatz — the detached Prussian enclave surrounded on three sides by Bohemia — and this iron notgeld piece dates to the acute coin shortage that followed Germany's defeat in 1918. Hoarding of metal coinage and the near-collapse of the Reichsbank's distribution network forced hundreds of municipalities, down to the smallest factory towns, to issue their own emergency money. Iron was the practical choice: copper and nickel were still being rationed as postwar industrial commodities.
