Bayrische Schuhfabriken A.-G. was one of several Bavarian manufacturers that issued notgeld tokens during the acute small-change shortages of the early Weimar period, when official coinage had effectively vanished from everyday transactions. Factory-issued iron pieces like this one circulated as internal scrip — redeemable at company stores or against wages — a practice that kept production lines running when workers couldn't make change for a pfennig.
Iron was the material of necessity, not preference; zinc and aluminum had their own supply constraints in postwar Germany.
