Schönwald is a small town in the Black Forest, and this piece belongs to the vast wave of German municipal notgeld issued when central coinage supplies collapsed after World War I. By 1920, zinc was still the only practical metal available to local authorities willing to produce their own emergency currency — copper and nickel had been consumed by the war effort years earlier.
