Schönebeck an der Elbe was home to one of Germany's significant percussion cap manufacturers, and this zinc token served as emergency small change — Notgeld — issued by the factory itself for use among its workforce. The practice was common during the severe coin shortages of the early 1920s, when the Reichsbank struggled to keep low-denomination coinage in circulation as inflation accelerated. Factory-issued scrip of this type was typically redeemable only at the company canteen or store, binding workers' purchasing power directly to their employer.
