Schlitz notgeld tokens of this type were issued by the estate administration of the Schlitz counts — the Burggüter Verwaltung — during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany between roughly 1916 and 1922. The Schloss Schlitz complex in Hesse had remained in the hands of the Görtz-Schlitz family for centuries, and the estate functioned semi-independently enough to justify issuing its own emergency currency for use among laborers and tenants on the property.
The Menzel reference numbers suggest this is the third die variant of the type, implying at least two earlier iterations preceded it.
