Wächtersbacher Steingutfabrik, a ceramics manufacturer in Schlierbach, Hesse, issued zinc notgeld tokens during the acute small-change shortages that gripped Germany in the early 1920s. With the Reichsbank unable to keep fractional coinage in circulation — metal value routinely exceeded face value as inflation accelerated — industrial firms across the country began minting their own plant currency to pay workers and facilitate canteen transactions. Zinc was the practical choice: cheap, available, and sufficiently undesirable to hoarders that tokens would actually circulate.
