At centre, the denomination '10 Pfennig' is printed in white Gothic script within a red disc surrounded by decorative black scrollwork. Below this, the large Gothic legend 'Notgeldschein' appears in red, followed by the issuing authority text and validity clause, with a serial number in a ruled box at the bottom. The Sanitätshundeverein — the Medical Dog Association — trained dogs for battlefield casualty recovery, a practice that had proven its value during the First World War. By 1921, with the organization stripped of military funding and operating on civic goodwill alone, local branches resorted to issuing their own notgeld to cover basic operating costs. Wismar's branch commissioned Kunstdruckerei A. Sander locally, keeping the print run small and the economics simple.
Notgeld issued by non-municipal bodies — associations, clubs, private societies — represents the outer edge of the 1921 inflation-era emergency currency phenomenon. This piece is among the more obscure issuers in that category.
