The circular legend KLEINGELDERSATZMARKE arcs across the upper portion of the coin between the pearl rim and an inner twisted rope circle. Within the rope circle, the large numeral 10 is prominently centered in the field, denoting the denomination. Three six-pointed stars are evenly spaced along the lower arc of the rope circle, serving as decorative separators. |

Saalfeld's 1918 iron notgeld issue belongs to the first wave of municipal emergency coinage that swept Germany as the Imperial government requisitioned copper and nickel for war production, leaving local authorities to fill the gap with whatever base metals remained available. Iron was a poor substitute — it corroded badly in pocket wear, which is why undamaged survivors are harder to find than the original mintages suggest.
