Ruppersdorf's chamotte works — a refractory brick and fireclay manufacturer in Saxony — issued this token during the acute small-change shortages that plagued Germany in the early 1920s, when municipal and corporate Notgeld filled the vacuum left by hoarded official coinage. Factory-issued pieces like this one functioned as internal scrip, redeemable at the company canteen or store and rarely circulating beyond the plant gates, which explains why zinc examples often survive in surprisingly clean condition despite the metal's general susceptibility to corrosion.
