Rodach issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1918 as the German imperial economy collapsed under wartime metal requisitions. Copper and nickel had long been redirected to munitions; municipalities across the smaller Saxon duchies were left to source whatever base metals remained locally to keep small-change transactions functioning. Zinc, a poor substitute, corrodes readily in humid conditions — which explains why surviving examples in undamaged condition are far less common than surviving mintage figures might suggest.
