Rehau's 1917 zinc notgeld belongs to the first major wave of German municipal emergency coinage, issued after the imperial government's wartime requisitioning of copper and nickel effectively gutted the small-change supply. Rehau, a small Bavarian town near the Bohemian border, was among hundreds of municipalities forced to produce their own stopgap coinage when the Reichsbank could no longer guarantee adequate fractional currency distribution to provincial communities.
Zinc was the compromise material — abundant enough to be spared from the war machine, miserable enough to corrode badly in pocket wear. Most surviving examples show edge and surface oxidation for exactly this reason.
