Regensburg issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1917 under the same wartime metal shortages that pushed hundreds of German municipalities into emergency coinage — nickel and copper had been systematically requisitioned for the war effort since 1915, leaving civic authorities to source whatever base metals remained available. Zinc was a compromise nobody wanted; it corrodes readily and strikes poorly, which is why survivors in clean condition are consistently harder to find than the original mintage figures might suggest.
