Rabatt-Spar-Verein notes were issued by consumer cooperative discount associations — members collected small-denomination coupons with purchases and redeemed accumulated totals against future goods. Vaethen-Tangerhütte's version dates to the inflationary spiral of 1921, before the hyperinflation peak, when even trivial fractional values in pfennig denominations had enough purchasing relevance to justify printing. Zimmer & Munte in Magdeburg handled a significant volume of regional Notgeld and cooperative scrip from this period, which partly explains the relatively polished production for what is essentially a retail loyalty instrument.
