| Obverse description | A boldly rendered profile of an Imperial eagle's head facing left occupies the central field, sculpted in high relief with finely detailed feathering and a strongly hooked beak, evoking a heraldic character. The design is engraved in a naturalistic yet stylized manner characteristic of the Weimar-era medallic art. The circular legend DEUTSCHES REICH runs around the periphery, separated from the inner field by a fine beaded border. The composition is attributed to engraver Friedrich Wilhelm Hörnlein. |

Patterns from the 1924 German currency reform are a direct product of the Rentenmark stabilization, when the Reich Finance Ministry and Reichsbank were simultaneously evaluating dozens of proposed coin designs and compositions before settling on production types. Schaaf 317 G3 is one of several copper trials documented for the 10 Pfennig denomination from this period — most never advanced beyond internal review, leaving survivors almost exclusively in institutional and specialist hands.
