Offstein's sugar factory, like hundreds of German agricultural enterprises in the early twentieth century, issued its own token currency to pay seasonal laborers — many of them migrant workers from Eastern Europe who might never visit a conventional bank. These Fabrikmarken circulated strictly within the factory's own store and canteen, effectively tying wages to company spending. The practice was controversial enough that Weimar-era labor reforms eventually curtailed it.
Nickel-plated zinc points to a post-WWI issue, when nickel alone was too scarce for small industrial tokens.
