Issued by the Vereinigte Margarine Werke — a consolidated margarine producer in Nürnberg — this zinc notgeld piece dates to the acute commodity shortages of 1918, when German municipal and corporate entities alike were authorized to produce emergency small change as the imperial coinage system buckled under wartime metal requisitions. Zinc was itself a compromise material by this point; copper and nickel had long been redirected to armaments production.
