Chillingworth was a Nuremberg-based metalworking firm whose wartime notgeld issues filled the void left by hoarded imperial coinage after 1914. Zinc was the material of necessity — copper and nickel were requisitioned for shell casings almost immediately after mobilization, forcing municipal and corporate issuers alike to work with whatever the war economy permitted.
