Industrial firms across Bavaria resorted to private emergency coinage when the central supply of low-denomination currency collapsed entirely, paying workers in tokens redeemable only at company-controlled outlets. Zinc was the material of necessity: copper and nickel had been consumed by wartime munitions production and remained in critically short supply well into the early 1920s.
