Prückner's delicatessen operated as a royal purveyor — "Hoflieferant" denoting an official supplier to a German court — and issued these zinc tokens during the First World War, when acute metal and small-change shortages forced hundreds of German retailers to produce their own emergency currency. The Kriegsgeld phenomenon produced thousands of distinct local issues, most redeemable only at the issuing establishment.
Zinc was the material of necessity by 1916–17, copper and nickel having been requisitioned for the war effort.
