Nordhalben is a small municipality in Upper Franconia, Bavaria, and like hundreds of German towns it issued zinc notgeld coinage during the acute metal shortages of World War I. Municipal authorities across Germany were authorized to produce emergency small change when imperial coinage disappeared from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply never minted in sufficient quantities to meet demand. Zinc was the compromise metal: abundant enough to be practical, worthless enough that no one would bother melting it down.
