Gruschwitz Textilwerke issued this iron notgeld token in 1918 as German small-denomination coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply unproduced as the Imperial mint redirected metal toward the war. Factories across Silesia and beyond were forced to create their own substitute currency just to make payroll. The Neusalz an der Oder plant, a major linen and textile operation on the Oder River, was substantial enough to warrant its own formally struck pieces rather than the crude stamped cardboard many smaller employers resorted to.
