Neurode was a coal-mining district in Lower Silesia, and this iron notgeld piece dates to the acute small-change shortage of 1918, when the German wartime metal requisitions had stripped copper and nickel from circulation entirely. Municipal and district authorities across the Reich were left to issue their own emergency coinage, iron being one of the few metals still available in sufficient quantity. The Neurode district was among hundreds of local bodies that stepped into the vacuum left by a central government that had simply run out of acceptable coinage metal.
