Karl Stöhr's construction firm issued this zinc notgeld almost certainly during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany in the early 1920s, when municipal and private issuers alike scrambled to keep commerce moving at the local level. That a Baugeschäft — a building contractor — felt compelled to produce its own internal currency says something pointed about just how completely the state's monetary infrastructure had broken down at street level.
