Issued by a private brickworks during the final year of World War I, this piece belongs to the vast wave of German Notgeld — emergency money produced by firms, municipalities, and institutions when official small change disappeared almost entirely from circulation. The Tonwerk Ostenrieder operation in Moosburg an der Isar was precisely the kind of mid-sized industrial concern that both needed small denominations for wage payments and had the local standing to issue them without immediate legal challenge.
Zinc was the default material by 1918, with copper and nickel long redirected to the war effort.
