| Additional information |
Gewerkschaft Volkenroda was a potash mining operation in Thuringia, and like many German industrial enterprises during World War I, it issued notgeld tokens when imperial coinage disappeared from circulation — hoarded by the public or consumed by wartime metal demands. Iron was the obvious substitute: cheap, available, and sufficiently unwanted by hoarders to actually circulate. These mine-issued pieces functioned as wage scrip and canteen currency within the closed economy of the pit and its associated workers' settlement.
