Obverse lettering HANOMAG 10 ✶ LINDEN ✶
Reverse description Octagonal reverse sharing the same utilitarian design vocabulary as the obverse. The large numeral '10' dominates the central field, set within an inner border of rope or twisted cord pattern. The circular legend 'KLEINGELDERSATZMARKE' (small change substitute token) runs around the upper and lateral periphery outside the inner border. Three five-pointed stars are evenly spaced along the lower arc as decorative separators. An outer ring of raised beads follows the octagonal outline, consistent with the obverse treatment.

Additional information

Hanomag — best known later as a locomotive and tractor manufacturer — issued this zinc token in 1917 as German industry scrambled to keep factory workers supplied with small change after the Imperial government's wartime metal requisitions stripped copper and nickel from circulation. The Linden plant, then on the outskirts of Hannover, was a major armaments and machinery producer, making its workforce large enough to justify a private token issue of real practical scale.

Zinc was the material of last resort, corroding badly in pocket wear, which explains why clean survivors are genuinely scarce despite originally significant mintages.
