Additional information

Lichtenfels issued iron notgeld coinage during the material shortages of World War I, when copper and nickel were requisitioned for the war economy and municipalities across Germany were left to improvise small-denomination coinage from whatever metals remained available. Iron was the default solution for hundreds of small Bavarian towns, and Lichtenfels was no exception — a minor administrative center on the Main river with no particular minting tradition of its own.

The Funck reference places this among the documented municipal issues, though iron notgeld from small Franconian towns survives in wildly uneven quantities depending on how thoroughly local hoards were dispersed.
