Langerfeld, now absorbed into Wuppertal, was a textile and metalworking district where private emergency money — Notgeld — circulated widely when the Imperial government failed to supply adequate small change during World War I. Alb. & E. Henkels issued these iron tokens for use among their own workforce, a common factory-scrip arrangement that sidestepped the coin shortage entirely. Iron was the material of necessity; zinc and aluminum were already constrained by war production demands.
