Landsberg an der Warthe — now Gorzów Wielkopolski in western Poland — issued notgeld iron coinage during the acute metal shortages of World War I, when copper and nickel had been almost entirely redirected to military production. Municipal authorities across Germany were effectively forced into improvised local currency, with each town's magistrat responsible for its own designs, denominations, and distribution. Iron was the fallback: abundant, cheap, and deeply unpopular with the public, who found it heavy, prone to rust, and easy to counterfeit with scrap.
