Bad Helmstedt — officially "Helmstedt" — had a modest spa identity built around its mineral springs, and Kurhaus Gesundbrunnen was one of the private resort establishments that exploited the local waters commercially. This note is Notgeld, issued by the proprietor Max Herbst rather than any municipal authority, making it essentially a privately issued scrip tied to a single business. That arrangement was commonplace during the inflationary disruptions of the early 1920s, when small-denomination coinage vanished from circulation and shopkeepers, innkeepers, and resort owners printed their own substitutes.
