10 Pfennig Kreis Wanzleben

Wanzleben was an agricultural district southwest of Magdeburg, and its Kreisausschuss — the elected district administrative body — issued this note during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany in the final year of the war and into the early Weimar period. Metal coinage had been systematically withdrawn and redirected toward the war economy, leaving local governments, merchants, and municipalities to paper over the gap themselves. The result was an explosion of Kleingeldersatz issues across thousands of German localities.

Faber of Magdeburg printed a large volume of regional Notgeld, and the proximity of printer to issuer here was entirely practical — short runs, fast turnaround, low overhead.
